TeamSupreme: Hey Teddy! We all know you had a brilliant year in 2009, what were the highlights for you?

Teddy Music: I would say working with Skepta on his album “Microphone champion”. It was a massive opportunity for me, it put me more on the map. Also working on Lethal Bizzle’s album “Go Hard”. I never knew him and he reached out to me, so a big respect to him. Also my Rinse FM show, it’s got me more shows/performances and my name recognised around the UK, and also internationally.

TS: You recently had a name change from Silencer to Teddy, what prompted you to do that?

TM: I just want to be seen more professional. Using the name ‘Silencer’ isn’t something that an average upper class individual would be happy with, so when meeting them they could be a bit hesitant if I had a meeting with them. I hope everyone having doubts in the name change can respect it and just accept it for what it is. My name is officially Teddy Music.

TS: Your forthcoming release with G.Tank titled “Ghanaian Fire” is out June 7th, and you just released “The Lunch Box EP” with him too. Where can we buy these releases?

TM: It will be everywhere HMV, Play, Juno and also alot of independant stores even on MP3, iTunes, Amazon, 7Digital and many more. I’ve got a distribution deal so hopefully they get it to all the stores on time.

TS: Have you got any more collaborations with producers that we can expect?

Check the rest after the jump…

TM: Yes, I’m supposed to collaborate with Terror Danjah, Rude Kid (Alien Musik) and S-X (Stay Fresh) so far but if there is anyone else that is good and would like to reach out holla me on Facebook! I always enjoy experimenting in music.

TS: Which is your favourite program to produce on and why?

TM: FL Studio (any version, it doesn’t matter) because it has a raw sound that the majority of programs don’t have. The sound it has used to be called unprofressional but now people are making mainstream music with FruityLoops so the tables have turned!

TS: What’s the longest you’ve ever worked on a tune? Why was the reason it took so long?

TM: 7-8 hours because you can sit down and listen to a tune and after an hour realise something is missing, that’s the crazy part about it. It may need a hi hat on top on a hi hat, the kick doesn’t fit the track, melodies ain’t sitting right or whatever. The track you’re making needs serious concentration and focus.

TS: If you could work with anyone in UK right now, who would it be and why?

TM: Wiley, ’cause when ever we talk, we argue or get at each other too much. We might aswell let out our anger musically, it would be crazy!!!

TS: What kind of things/people inspire you to make your instrumentals?

TM: I listen to alot of Hip-Hop so when I hear a crazy track I try my best to channel it into grime but I also make other genres for the people that don’t know (professional music).

TS: Was producing your first love or have you ever tried to pick up a mic and
become an emcee?

TM: Yes, for the people that didn’t know I was an emcee before I started DJing. I loved it I’m actually starting again but for my crew’s album/singles (Underground Unit). I just want to do everything musically now.

TS: As you mentioned, you are a member of Underground Unit, what has the group got installed for 2010?

TM: Singles at the moment, we actually have our first single ready (Hip-Hop/RnB). We are currently discussing venue spots with the director for a video. We are not a Grime crew anymore. we make any sort of music that suits us, we mix Jazz sounds with Grime tempo for instance, and just pick and mix genres together. We tend to be very experimental.

TS: Lot’s of emcees have vocalled your beats, what would you class as your
favourite vocal?

TM: Erm… I would say Tempz’s version on one of my biggest tracks, Boy Of The Ting. But he has jumped on many more of my tracks, they are gonna smash up the clubs.

TS: I’ve seen you say on Twitter/Facebook about making some “mainstream” music. Can we expect to hear that soon or is it still Grime for the time being?

TM: If anyone has realised I haven’t been making alot of Grime anymore. I just jump on FL Studio and make music at any tempo I want now days. One day I can feel like making Grime then another day I feel like making Hip-Hop, then Electro, it all varies really! But yeah, I have make trying to make mainstream music with Underground Unit so watch out for that on the TV’s.

TS: Where do the think Grime fits into the mainstream, with artists like Tinchy,
Chipmunk and Dizzee?

TM: To be honest, Grime doesn’t fit into the mainstream, it never will. If it sells crazy units, it will only be underground supporters. The mainstream do not want to support Grime, otherwise we would all be where we need to be, which is at the top. They would say something like this on a an advert just to keep us Grime fans happy, just to not make us think they have crossed over; “top selling Grime artist Tinchy Stryder”. What we need to understand is they are now artists, they make watever benefits them, they make what they want now. I would say out of all the people that have gone mainstream, Tinchy has made the most Grime though. With Chipmunk, I have only heard him on 2 Grime(ish) tracks, and Dizzee is just a popstar to me. He originated from the Grime scene but has now developed himself into a popstar. All of the things I am saying, it is not a bad thing. I actually clap my hands for every single thing they do, because it opens more doors for the younger generation.

TS: Not only have Grime Artists started to make mainstream music, but they are also dabbling with that Dubstep sound. How do you see grime progressing as a genre?

TM: Well, I think we are gettin more respect in the clubs now, because it was so quiet before but now promoters are requesting us now which is really a good thing. We must be making good music now, we will hopefully start grabbing the right peoples ears for attention.

TS: As a DJ yourself, which producers and emcees are your favourites and which ones get the biggest reaction at a rave?

TM: Erm, it varies on how you drop the tracks, but I would say Rapid, Rude Kid, S-X and General Tank are my favourite producers at the minute. They tend to surprise me when they make new music.

TS: There’s a lot of talk about Rinse going legal, with the petition floating
around, what are your thoughts on this?

TM: I think it’s a big look for all of us, because then the FM frequency will always be live and large companies will start to take us seriously. Also, professional events will start booking us and sponsoring deals could come into play. It will open more opportunities for us and them, it will also reduce limitations if they go legal. Good luck to Rinse FM, I always knew they would get there.

TS: Lastly is there anything you would like to say to your fans and any shout
outs?

TM: Teddy & G.Tank Present “Ghanaian Fire” is coming out June 7th 2010 so make sure you grab your copy when it lands (HMV, Play, Juno and many many more) and also make sure you grab The Lunch Box EP by Teddy and G.Tank now on iTunes and Amazon NOWW! www.teddymusic.co.uk landing soon, and watch out for the shows I’m at. Big shouts to all my fans, I love the support I’m getting from you lot. www.twitter.com/teddy_music and not to forget my team (Underground Unit). Large up the team, PEACE!

TS: Thanks Teddy, Ghanaian Fire is out June 7th, be sure to grab a copy!
